چکیده

The effects of various geochemical processes on arsenic enrichment in a high-arsenic aquifer at Jianghan Plain in Central China were investigated using multivariate models developed from combined adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and multiple linear regression (MLR). The results indicated that the optimum variable group for the AFNIS model consisted of bicarbonate, ammonium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, fluorescence index, pH, and siderite saturation. These data suggest that reductive dissolution of iron/manganese oxides, phosphate-competitive adsorption, pH-dependent desorption, and siderite precipitation could integrally affect arsenic concentration. Analysis of the MLR models indicated that reductive dissolution of iron(III) was primarily responsible for arsenic mobilization in groundwaters with low arsenic concentration. By contrast, for groundwaters with high arsenic concentration (i.e., > 170 μg/L), reductive dissolution of iron oxides approached a dynamic equilibrium. The desorption effects from phosphate-competitive adsorption and the increase in pH exhibited arsenic enrichment superior to that caused by iron(III) reductive dissolution as the groundwater chemistry evolved. The inhibition effect of siderite precipitation on arsenic mobilization was expected to exist in groundwater that was highly saturated with siderite. The results suggest an evolutionary dominance of specific geochemical process over other factors controlling arsenic concentration, which presented a heterogeneous distribution in aquifers. Arsenic pollution in deep drinking wells in Yuncheng Basin, China: occurrence and mechanisms

Arsenic pollution in groundwater caused serious environment and health problem world widely. Few are reported for the occurrence and mechanisms of arsenic pollution in deep aquifers, though it is well documented by numerous study for arsenic enrichment in shallow groundwater. In this study, arsenic pollution was found in deep wells for drinking purpose. A total of 112 drinking groundwater sampl...

Geochemical modeling and multivariate statistical evaluation of trace elements in arsenic contaminated groundwater systems of Viterbo Area, (Central Italy)

Contamination of groundwater by naturally occurring arsenic has recently become a disturbing environmental problem in Viterbo area, Central Italy. Arsenic concentrations in most of the public supply networks exceed the maximum allowable limit of 10 μg/l (WHO) for drinking water. The primary purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of the factors contributing to the high levels ...

Effects of anion competitive adsorption on arsenic enrichment in groundwater.

Long-term intake of high arsenic groundwater has caused serious endemic disease on people in Datong Basin, northern China. The high arsenic groundwater has medium to high alkalinity with a mean pH value of 8.1; the water generally belongs to HCO(3)-Na type water and contains HPO(4)(2-) in most samples. In this study, batch experiments and geochemical modeling were conducted to reveal the geoche...

Geochemical Triggers of Arsenic Mobilization during Managed Aquifer Recharge.

Mobilization of arsenic and other trace metal contaminants during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) poses a challenge to maintaining local groundwater quality and to ensuring the viability of aquifer storage and recovery techniques. Arsenic release from sediments into solution has occurred during purified recycled water recharge of shallow aquifers within Orange County, CA. Accordingly, we examine...
